ROG Xbox Ally X20 is out: the Ally X with a 7.4-inch OLED for $1,299.99

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 started shipping on October 15. It is the first Ally with an OLED screen, and it costs $1,299.99 on the ASUS Store, $300 more than the ROG Xbox Ally X it is based on.

Same internals, new screen

Under the shell, the X20 is an Ally X. ASUS lists the same Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme (8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.0 GHz), 24 GB of LPDDR5X, a 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD and the same 80 Wh battery. Don’t expect higher frame rates from the chip.

The change is the display. The Ally X uses a 7-inch 1080p IPS-level panel at 120 Hz. The X20 moves to a 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED, still 120 Hz, with FreeSync Premium Pro, Dolby Vision HDR and a rated 600 nits SDR and 1400 nits HDR peak. ASUS also lists 100% DCI-P3 coverage and an anti-reflection coating over Gorilla Glass Victus.

Other changes on the spec sheet:

• Sticks: TMR joysticks with RGB light rings.
• Storage card: a microSD Express reader (PCIe Gen4 x1) in place of the Ally X’s UHS-II slot. Regular UHS-I cards still work.
• USB4 port: now listed with DisplayPort 2.1 output.
• Charger: a 68 W USB-C adapter (ASUS says whether it’s in the box depends on the region).
• Weight: 756 g, up from the Ally X’s 715 g.

Standalone or bundle

ASUS first showed the X20 as a bundle, then added the standalone model at $1,299.99. The bundle is listed at $2,499.99 and adds the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses, a Pelican Protector case and a dbrand Killswitch.

Should you upgrade?

If you already own an Ally X, the X20 gets you a better screen and nothing more. Battery, chip and memory are the same, so games won’t run faster. If you’re buying your first Windows handheld and want OLED, the X20 is the Xbox Ally to get. The full specs are on the ROG Xbox Ally X20 page, and you can compare it with the Ally X or the Steam Deck OLED.
