Hardware guide
eGPUs for gaming handhelds
By ElvisPublished
An external graphics dock turns a Windows handheld into a desk gaming PC. Whether it works, and how well, depends on the port your handheld has. Below are the handhelds in our catalog by eGPU port, the docks people pair with them, and what reviewers found.
Our take
An eGPU makes most sense if your handheld has OCuLink, or if you'd otherwise buy a gaming PC for the desk. A dock with a built-in laptop GPU is the simplest route; an open dock with your own desktop card costs less up front and can be upgraded. I'd skip the most expensive Thunderbolt 5 docks for a handheld, because a USB4 port can't use their full bandwidth.

Which handhelds can use an eGPU
OCuLink 7 handhelds
A direct PCIe 4.0 x4 link at 64 Gbps, and the fastest option. It carries graphics only.
AYANEO 3, AYANEO Flip DS, AYANEO Flip KB, GPD Win 4 (2025), GPD Win Max 2 (2025), OneXPlayer X1 (Core Ultra 7 155H), OneXPlayer X1 Pro
USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 35 handhelds
Up to 40 Gbps. Slower than OCuLink for graphics, but one cable can also charge the handheld and run the dock's ports.
Acer Nitro Blaze 11, Acer Nitro Blaze 8, Acer Predator Atlas 8, ASUS ROG Ally X (2024), ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20, AYANEO 2S, AYANEO 3, AYANEO Flip 1S DS, AYANEO Flip 1S KB, AYANEO Flip DS, AYANEO Flip KB, AYANEO KUN, AYANEO SLIDE, GPD Win 4 (2025), GPD Win 5, GPD Win Max 2 (2025), GPD Win Mini (2025), Lenovo Legion Go (2023), Lenovo Legion Go 2, Lenovo Legion Go S, MSI Claw 7 AI+ A2VM, MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM, MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, MSI Claw A1M, MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM, OneXFly F1 Pro, OneXPlayer 3, OneXPlayer X1 (Core Ultra 7 155H), OneXPlayer X1 Pro, OneXPlayer X2, OneXPlayer X2 Air, OneXPlayer X2 Mini, OneXPlayer X2 Mini Pro, ZOTAC GAMING ZONE
ROG XG Mobile interface 1 handheld
ASUS's own connector, used only by the original ROG Ally among handhelds.
From each handheld's port list on its spec page. The Steam Deck, Switch and Android handhelds have no eGPU-capable port.
What an eGPU does for a handheld
An external GPU dock adds a laptop or desktop graphics card to a handheld when it sits on a desk. You play on a monitor or TV plugged into the dock: Lon.TV turned off the Legion Go 2's own screen in its test, because sending video back to the handheld's display can cost performance over the cable.
The gains can be large. Lon.TV ran 3DMark Time Spy on a Lenovo Legion Go 2 and saw about 3,999 points on its built-in graphics against 9,493 with a GMKtec AD-GP1 dock. Notebookcheck reports the ROG XG Mobile (2025) more than tripling the ROG Xbox Ally X's Geekbench 6 OpenCL score.
OCuLink, USB4 and Thunderbolt 5
The connection limits how much of the graphics card you get. OCuLink is a direct PCIe 4.0 x4 link at 64 Gbps. Liliputing measured the AYANEO AG01 at 148 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider on High over OCuLink, against 121 fps over USB4, on a mini PC. Over USB4 the same cable also runs the dock's USB, Ethernet and SD ports, which OCuLink doesn't.
Thunderbolt 5 docks such as the ROG XG Mobile (2025) work on USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 handhelds, but Notebookcheck points out that handhelds are limited to those ports, so they can't use the dock's extra bandwidth.
Hot-plugging is another caveat. Lon.TV found it could connect and disconnect the dock while the Legion Go 2 was idle, but unplugging it mid-game crashed the game.

Compatibility notes
ASUS lists the ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X as compatible with the ROG XG Mobile (2025). CGMagazine says support is limited to ASUS devices in practice, and found it didn't work on a Legion Go 2.
GPD says its G1 dock is designed for the WIN Max 2, WIN 4, WIN Mini and ROG Ally X. The original ROG Ally works with the 2023 ROG XG Mobile through ASUS's own connector, according to ASUS's specification page.
