Qualcomm Dragonwing Q-8750

By ElvisPublished

Qualcomm's Dragonwing Q-8750 powers the AYN Odin 3 and Odin 3 Portal. Reviewers saw PS2 and GameCube upscaled to 1080p and beyond, and some PC games through GameHub. Switch emulation is still uneven, and it draws much more power than older chips under load.

We haven't tested these handhelds ourselves. This guide draws on published reviews of the handhelds built on this chip, and on Qualcomm's own specifications.

Our take

The Q-8750 makes PS2 and GameCube emulation a solved problem, and that's the headline. The reviews are less convinced about Switch, which is what most people buying a top Android handheld hope for.

The trade-off is power draw. In demanding PC games it can drain the battery in half the time of a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld, so buy it for headroom and turn it down when you don't need it.

Emulation and PC games in the Odin 3

Retro Handhelds saw most GameCube and PS2 games run at 1080p, got decent results in some PS3 games and measured a 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stress loop score of 6541. Gardiner Bryant found PS2 and GameCube upscaled cleanly to 2.5x, with Metroid Dread holding 60 fps.

PC games through GameHub run better than on older chips. Joey's Retro Handhelds got Metaphor: ReFantazio at 40 to 60 fps, and Gardiner Bryant saw Nier: Automata at about 60 fps, dipping to the high 40s at 720p.

Switch is the weak spot. Joey's Retro Handhelds and Gardiner Bryant both found Switch emulation uneven and not yet a reason to buy.

Power draw and heat

Efficiency depends on the load. In a Switch test with Captain Toad, Joey's Retro Handhelds got 322 minutes against 263 on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Odin 2 Portal. In a GameHub test with Dispatch the Odin 3 lasted 142 minutes against 272, drawing 16 to 17 W where Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 devices drew about 10 W or less.

Retro Handhelds calls the thermals excellent but says the fan can whine when pushed hard, and Gardiner Bryant calls it loud and unpredictable.
