Qualcomm chip

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865

By ElvisPublished Updated

The Snapdragon 865 is a phone chip that became the budget workhorse of Android emulation handhelds, including the Retroid Pocket 5, Retroid Pocket Mini V2 and AYN Thor Lite. Reviewers find it comfortable up to PS2 and GameCube, with Switch emulation hit-or-miss, and it's efficient enough for long battery life.

We haven't tested these handhelds ourselves. This guide draws on published reviews of the handhelds built on this chip, and on Qualcomm's own specifications.

Our take

The Snapdragon 865 is the chip I'd point most emulation fans to first. It covers everything up to PS2, GameCube and Dreamcast well, it's cheap, and it sips battery.

Where it runs out is Switch, Wii U and PC games through Winlator. If those matter, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or newer handheld costs more and is worth it.

Emulation in the Retroid Pocket 5

Qualcomm lists a Kryo 585 CPU and an Adreno 650 GPU. Retro Handhelds says the chip comfortably plays up to PS2, with a smattering of Switch games that need tinkering with emulator versions and drivers.

The Sixth Axis had Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube and some Switch games running, plus Genshin Impact, Zenless Zone Zero and Infinity Nikki. Android Authority's buying guide credits years of driver work for its retro performance and calls Switch, PS3 and Windows emulation hit-or-miss at best.

Joey's Retro Handhelds says most games on every system except Switch are well set, and calls the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Odin 2 Mini much more powerful for Switch and Winlator.

Battery and heat

Joey's Retro Handhelds saw a lowest runtime of 3 hours 35 minutes with settings maxed, and 11 hours in GBA after a retail update. The Sixth Axis says the battery lasted far longer than any other handheld it owns, including the Steam Deck and ROG Ally.

Cooling is relaxed. Joey's Retro Handhelds found the device never got quite hot and the fan rarely ran, though Sport mode is loud.
