AMD chip
AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme
By ElvisPublished
The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is the top chip in AMD's Z2 line for handhelds, used in the Lenovo Legion Go 2 and MSI Claw A8. It has the same CPU and GPU as the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme in the ROG Xbox Ally X, minus the NPU. Reviewers found a modest step over the Z1 Extreme at full power and a bigger one at low power, with screen resolution and memory deciding how far it goes in each handheld.
We haven't tested these handhelds ourselves. This guide draws on published reviews of the handhelds built on this chip, and on AMD's own specifications.
Our take
The Z2 Extreme is a solid chip that rarely feels like the headline. In the Legion Go 2 the story is the OLED and the 1200p screen it has to drive; in the Claw A8, reviewers talk more about the 20 W sustained limit MSI set than about the chip itself. Reviewers keep landing on the same point: it's a better Z1 Extreme, mostly at low power.
I'd pick a Z2 Extreme handheld for its screen, grips or price, and treat the chip as table stakes for 2025 and 2026 Windows handhelds. If raw speed is the priority, Intel's Arc G3 Extreme has moved ahead.

What changed from the Z1 Extreme
AMD lists eight CPU cores (three Zen 5 and five Zen 5c) with 16 threads, a 16 compute unit RDNA 3.5 GPU and a 15 to 35 W range. That is four more GPU compute units than the Z1 Extreme's 12, on a newer graphics architecture.
Performance in the Legion Go 2 and Claw A8
On the Legion Go 2, Tom's Hardware measured Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 66 fps at 800p and 42 fps at 1200p on battery, and says the biggest gains over older handhelds are at 800p. Windows Central averaged 38.66 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 on the Steam Deck preset at 1200p, and PCWorld got a 3DMark Time Spy score of 3,984.
Tom's Guide's maxed-out Legion Go 2 runs were only marginally above Z1 Extreme handhelds, though hand-tuned settings got Cyberpunk 2077 into the mid-50s at 1200p with FSR 3.
On the Claw A8, Tom's Guide found MSI's claimed 30% gain held only at the 33 W profile; at 17 W it saw roughly 20 to 25%. Club386 measured the Claw A8 4 fps ahead of the ROG Xbox Ally X at stock power and 3 fps behind at 35 W, and 48% more fps than the Steam Deck OLED at stock power while drawing 5 W more.
Notebookcheck says the Claw A8's 20 W sustained limit holds CPU scores back, and puts its gaming on par with the Intel Claw 8 AI+. Trusted Reviews recorded 59 fps in Forza Horizon 5 at 1920x1200 on High, but about 23 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at Full HD on top presets, rising to 34 fps with FSR 2.1.
Battery and heat
Runtimes stay around two to three hours in demanding games. Windows Central got 2 h 17 min in Cyberpunk 2077 on the Legion Go 2, and Notebookcheck about 2.5 hours in its Performance mode. On the Claw A8, Club386 got just under two and a half hours of Cyberpunk 2077 at stock settings, and Trusted Reviews 2 hours 45 minutes in PCMark 10's gaming test.
Cooling depends on the handheld. PCWorld was impressed by how quiet the Legion Go 2 stayed in demanding games, and Notebookcheck measured 36 to 39 dB(A) in games on the Claw A8, with cool grips.
Against Intel's Arc G3 Extreme
Intel's 2026 chip has pulled ahead. Notebookcheck says the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ easily beats the Z2 Extreme, and Engadget saw 50 to 75 percent higher frame rates than the Legion Go 2 and ROG Xbox Ally X, though on an engineering sample with pre-production drivers.

GPU units are counted the way each maker counts them, so AMD compute units and Intel Xe-cores aren't comparable one to one.
